Black Friday Natural Hair Product Deals....

I know a lot of natural hair bloggers are posting Black Friday deals, so I thought I'd post a link to one of the most extensive sale lists I've seen. I won't be buying any new products any time soon! LOL

http://usweetpea.wordpress.com/2009/11/25/black-friday-deals/

Hey Coily Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in SERIOUS chill mode right about now! I just wanted to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving! (or as some would say.. "Happy Kill-the-Natives-and-Steal-Their-Land- Day!!") LOL. Nevertheless, I hope all of you are enjoying your time with your families and friends.

This will be the first year that I will NOT be in the mall doing the Black Friday thing. For one thing, I am BROKE this year.  Normally, I will still try to do big gifts even though I know it's only going to put me deeper in debt, but this year, I have decided not to do that to myself. We haven't received Christmas bonuses at my job for the past 2 years, so..... that's pretty much that!! LOL  This year, I will be giving LOVE for Christmas! LOL

Have a great weekend!!

"Hand in Hair Syndrome"... (LOL)

Is this you? I've noticed that ever since I went natural, I am constantly playing in my hair!!! LOL Not because I think it's so GORGEOUS or anything, (I wish!! LOL) but usually because I didn't have enough time to fix my curls the way I wanted before I left the house!!! So, all day long, I am adjusting, stretching and pulling curls, trying to achieve "the perfect curls". Usually, by the end of the day, (when it's time to RE-TWIST my hair) I get the look I want. But... by then, does it even MATTER? LOL

MY HAIR TODAY
SHEA, SHEA, SHEA... is all I can say!!!!!LOL It is what works for me more than any other product so far for my twist-outs and to combat dryness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can someone please remind me of this next time I decide to waste my money on Miss Jessie's or any other trendy products?? Jessie's made my hair look nice for a little while, but I paid for that with DRYNESS!!!! At least with the shea, I don't get those consequences.

Dry twistout using Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue.. Used Baby Buttercreme as a moisturizer because I had heard some people say it's a good moisturizer. What a lie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  LOL  I'm back to using shea butter and on occasion, Hair Milk, as my moisturizer. I stopped using Carol's Daughter. I have some other brand name that I got from the Nubian Heritage store in Brooklyn.

My hair is soooo shrunk up, tight, and DRY from the Baby Buttercreme. Even though I did get compliments, I don't like the way it feels and I'm definitely not feeling the shrunk up look. LOL

Video and pics from one of my HAIR IDOLS!! Coily Girl, Shakara Ledard.

Kabrina's Kinky Curly Custard Review.

She hates it!! I think her hair looks pretty, but I totally see why she doesn't like it. This stuff is over-priced CRAP. I ended up with a puffy MOP after I used it.

Just thought this was cute. African men in a video response to "Single Ladies." LOL

I found an interesting article about the new dress code at Morehouse College. As a teacher, I can't say I disagree with the policy. In my opinion, dress influences attitude. My students behave differently when they are in uniform versus their street clothes. I do understand that it's part of hip hop culture... don't get me wrong at all. I just think school is too important for fashion trends to disrupt learning.

Not to mention, the whole saggy pants this is PLAYED OUT!!! That was sooo 10-20 years ago!! The look now is more fitted. (I hate tight skinny jeans too, unless they're on a woman!!! LOL Maybe somewhere in between the sag and the tight skinny is appropriate!)

*************************************************************************************

Morehouse College isn’t having it anymore! You will not attend their learning institution and sag your pants at the same time. Pick one!
Via
AHH:
In an attempt to eliminate “inappropriate attire,” prestigious HBCU and private institution Morehouse College has adopted a policy that bans sagging and other styles associated with Hip-Hop culture.

The “Appropriate Attire Policy” initiative is the product of Morehouse President Robert Franklin, who is seeking to reestablish what he’s coined as the modern “Renaissance Man.” That individual, Franklin states, possesses the “5 Wells” of being well-spoken, well-read, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced.

Sagging is said to have originated in the penal system, where prisoners were unable to keep their pants up due to belt confiscations to prevent suicides and murder.

The style eventually made its way to popular culture courtesy of early 90’s Hip-Hop, when multi-platinum artists like Naughty By Nature and Kris Kross adopted sagging as an accessory to their fashion ensembles.

Although viewed as a style for juveniles, some prominent Hip-Hop artists in their 30s and 40s still utilize sagging in videos, concert, and award show appearances.

Along with the new sagging ban, students will not be allowed to sport any form of grillz, do-rags, hats, “stunna shades,” hoods, or pajamas to class.

In another controversial move, the Atlanta college has prohibited any students from wearing female clothing, such as dresses, tops, tunics, purses, and pumps.

School officials have argued that none of the new rulings were designed to discriminate against students who identify with Hip-Hop or gay culture. Instead, President Franklin states he hopes to have the next generation of Morehouse graduates live up to the school’s legacy, as seen in notable alumni such as Martin Luther King, Jr, Spike Lee, Samuel Jackson, Maynard Jackson, and Saul Williams.

While acknowledging student reaction has been mixed, Morehouse Office of Student Services VP William Bynum explained that the majority of students would just have to make minor adjustments to their dress.

“I would say that about 95 percent of the students on this campus feel that appearance matters to them,” Bynum told the Maroon Tiger, Morehouse’s school newspaper. “We are not trying to isolate anyone that falls under a category, you can just look at it like its one out of eleven things being addressed.”

On the gay rights issue, Bynum revealed that administrators first consulted the campus’ gay rights oganization Morehouse Safe Space, to make sure their policy was in order.

“We talked about it and then they took a vote. Of the 27 people in the room, only 3 were against it,” Bynum stated.

Morehouse College has an estimated student body of 2700, and is one of two black institutions to produce a Rhodes Scholar (1994, 2001, 2004).

Finally figured it out.....

The only product I can use from Miss Jessie's is the Curly Meringue. I used that, some shea butter, and a little coconut oil. Finally got the right mix...

I found 6 locations that sell Miss Jessie's in my area, and even found a Deva Curl salon yesterday. I'm thinking that might be better than the natural hair salon I've been going to. Have any of you ever gone to one and how would you compare it to a regular natural hair salon? My salon only seems to know about locs.

I need new Coily Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't featured anyone in a while! I would love to feature some (or ALL) of you!!! Please let me know if you'd be interested!!

Thx!!

Okay, I don't like the Miss Jessie's Curly Buttercreme either. It made my hair hard and dry. Definitely will not be adding this to my regimen. It sucks!! LOL Have you guys had the same results? Maybe I used it wrong??!! Would love your feedback. I'm going to buy my Curly Meringue tomorrow!!

UPDATE! UPDATE!!

I don't like Miss Jessie's Silkening Cream for twistouts anymore! My hair looked okay part of the day, but as it fully dried, it became too puffy and dry. I will stick to the Curly Meringue. It gives me consistently good results, and my hair still looks and feels nice at the end of the day.

My Hair Today...

This is a twistout using Miss Jessie's Stretch Silkening Cream. I think I have held out long enough. I'm going to buy some Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue and Stretch TODAY. I love how my twistouts turn out. Once again, shout out to my cousin Tina, because I was determined to hold out and not get sucked in by high priced products. But... what can I say? It really works!! LOL

Hello Hydration conditioner: Holy Grail???

I tried Hello Hydration conditioner again for the first time since I bc'ed. That was back when I was buying a ton of products on a whim because I still had no idea what to do with this new SHORT hair! LOL!! Back then I wasn't crazy about it. Probably because I still had straight pieces and it didn't really seem to be doing anything special for my hair. Well, I ran out of my Trader Joe Nourish conditioner , but really needed to co-wash my hair today. I had NO CHOICE but to give the Hello Hydration another whirl!

Surprise, surprise! I like this stuff! It's a nice, thick conditioner that I could feel start to work as soon as I put it on!! I also like the smell. It made my hair curl up nicely, which was another unexpected surprise. I actually did my first wash and go of the fall, and it turned out better with this stuff than with my Cantu'!!

Don't get me wrong... by no means will Hello Hydration become my new conditioner. I love the Trader Joe Nourish, which is sulfate-free. Hello Hydration does have cones, and I would never use its shampoo. But at least now I know I can use that for a nice wash and go!! Maybe I need to retry my Garnier Fructis..... hmmmm. LOL

Found a great article for anyone who suffers from "Winter Itch." I do... and it seems like NOTHING works !!! I have changed lotions 3 times so far!! Hopefully, this article will be helpful to you!!

Dry Skin and Winter Itch

10 Cold-Weather Options

If you're reading this at your home in Miami Beach, you can probably skip this chapter. Go out and bask in the warm, moist air. Give your skin a good drink of tropical humidity. Enjoy yourself. Have a nice day.

Okay, now that they're gone, the rest of us can get down to the business of keeping our skin from flaking off in a bunch of little piles while we scratch away the remaining months until spring. Yes, those of us who live in cold, dry climates—where the forced-air heater runs day and night—are the ones who know the agony of dry skin and winter itch.

Well, what to do about it? Easy. Turn down the heat and move to Florida. Can't move? Then at least turn down the heat; that's a big step along the path to healthier winter skin. There are plenty more steps you can take, and we've listed many of them here. They all follow one basic premise, however, and it's this: Dryness results from a lack of water in your skin—not oil. Keep that in mind as you read this and as you go about your daily routine this winter, and your skin will thank you for it.

Don't try to drink dryness away. Many beauty books and glamour magazines recommend drinking "at least seven or eight glasses of water per day" to keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness. Don't believe it.

"If you're totally dehydrated, your skin will become dry," says Kenneth Neldner, M.D., a professor and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. "But if you are normally hydrated, you cannot possibly counteract or correct dry skin by drinking water."

Put water where it counts. "The best way to get water into the skin is by soaking in it," says Hillard H. Pearlstein, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He recommends a 15-minute soak in lukewarm water, not hot water. And forget the notion that you should bathe every day. The rule of thumb for dry skin is: Bathe less and use cooler water.

Lubricate the skin. "Follow each bath with a moisturizer," says Dr. Pearlstein. "The tendency is for all the moisture that soaked into the skin to evaporate. If you bathe frequently, a moisturizer is doubly important. The moisturizer is what holds the water in.

Dr. Pearlstein says many people think the reason for applying moisturizers is to put oil back into the skin, but that's not totally true. "Just remember that dry skin is a function of water loss, not of oil loss, he says.

"Everybody knows how easy it is to cut the toenails or fingernails after they've been in water," he explains. "That's a good example of hydration, of what happens to the skin when you bathe." Moisturizers applied after the bath help keep water in the skin and therefore prevent drying.
Dry yourself damp—then stop. "It's much more effective to apply moisturizer to damp skin immediately after bathing than to put it on totally dry skin," says Dr. Neldner.

That's not to say you have to hop from the tub or shower soaking wet and immediately apply lotion. "But a couple of pats with a towel will make you as dry as you want to be before you apply the lotion," he says. "You're trying to trap a little water in the skin, and that's the fundamental rule of fighting off dryness."

Don't get greased by ad hype. "Nothing beats plain petroleum jelly or mineral oil as a moisturizer," says Howard Donsky, M.D., associate professor at the University of Toronto and staff dermatologist at Toronto General Hospital. In fact, for those who don't mind the feeling, virtually any vegetable oil (sunflower oil, peanut oil) or hydrogenated oil (Crisco) can be used to combat dry skin and winter itch. They are effective, safe, and pure skin lubricants. They are very inexpensive as well.

Those products do have one drawback, however. All of them tend to be greasy. "People like things that smell good, feel good, and don't make them feel like a greased pig," Dr. Pearlstein says. "It all depends on how much you want to spend, what you want to smell like, and how you want to feel. All moisturizers do the same basic thing, and there's no scientific way to prove that any one of the commercially available products is any better for you than another. It's strictly your personal decision."

Use oatmeal to heal. Some researchers believe people first discovered the skin-soothing effects of oatmeal nearly 4,000 years ago. Many folks are still discovering it today. "Oatmeal can work in the bath as a soothing agent," says Dr. Donsky. Just pour 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal (like Aveeno, available at pharmacies) into a tub of lukewarm water. The term colloidal simple means the oatmeal has been ground to find powder that will remain suspended in water.

"You can also use oatmeal as a soap substitute," he says. Tie some colloidal oatmeal in a handkerchief, dunk if in water, squeeze out the excess water, and use as you would a normal washcloth.

Select superfatted soaps. "Most soaps have lye in them," says Dr. Pearlstein, "and while lye is great for cleaning, it's very irritating to dry skin." He recommends that people with dry skin avoid strong soaps such as Dial or Ivory and reach instead for "superfatted" soaps like Basis, Neutrogena, or Dove. Superfatted soaps have extra amounts of fatty substances—cold cream, cocoa butter, coconut oil, or lanolin—added during the manufacturing process.

"A product like Dove, for instance, isn't really a soap at all," Dr. Pearlstein says. "It's more like a cold cream." But such are the trade-offs in the skin game. Though they don't clean as well, "the superfatted soaps are less irritating to dry skin," he says, "and they do make a difference."
Don't soap as often. "There's nothing therapeutic about soap," says Dr. Pearlstein. "We in America are the great overwashed, overdeodorized society, and we as dermatologists see more problems from the overuse of soap than we ever do from the lack of it." His advice: If it's not dirty, don't wash it.

Let a humidifier help. "Part of the problem with dry skin and itching is dry heat in the wintertime," says Dr. Pearlman. Furnace-heated air can reduce the humidity level inside your house to 10 percent or less, whereas 30 to 40 percent is closer to ideal for keeping moisture in your skin. For that reason, our experts all recommend the use of humidifiers during those dry winter months—but with a caution.

"People think that if they put a humidifier in their place, that'll take care of it," says Dr. Pearlstein. "But humidifiers are like air conditioners—you would really need a huge unit to do the whole house. However, if you put a smaller unit next to your bed, that can help."
"If you put a humidifier in your bedroom," Dr. Neldner adds, "then be sure you close the door to keep moisture in."

Does it help to do things like leaving the bathroom door open when you take a shower? "It might help for a little while," Dr. Neldner says, "because every little bit of humidity helps. When you're running that furnace in the winter, you're really sucking the moisture out of the air."

Keep it cool. One good way to combat winter itch is as easy as reaching for your thermostat and turning it down. "Keeping your house on the cool side in the winter might help," says Dr. Pearlstein. "That's because cool air has an anesthetic effect—it makes your skin feel good." When you heat your house too much, he explains, it makes blood vessels dilate, and when blood vessels dilate, the itch/tingle cycle begins. "But when you cool skin, either by cool water or cool air, it feels good," Dr. Pearlstein says. "And skin tends to be less itchy if you keep it on the cool side."

News Flash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (OK... maybe not really! LOL)

I am finally at shoulder length! (Well, at least my twistouts are!LOL) Granted, my ends are just barely skimming my shoulders, but I'm THERE!

It took me a little over 2 years to get here!! I am nowhere near my ideal length, but I had to celebrate this mini-milestone! It seems like it took forever to see some length while my hair is curly!!! (Of course I have to really stretch my twists downward for it to hang like this!!!)

My Hair Today!
This is a twistout using Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue! Shout out to my cousin Tina for giving me her samples she didn't want! I love this stuff!!! I know I said I wasn't going to get caught up in using anything overly expensive for my hair, but I might have to eat my words. This stuff worked wonders for my ends. Thanks Tina!!! It keeps my hair moisturized and I love my curls!!!!! Today I didn't really unravel my twists, but when I do, I have a lot more definition!!
Today I have one side of my hair pinned up. This has become kind of my signature style ever since I got that haircut a few months back. I usually only like the way one side of my hair turns out! LOL
Have a great day, Coily Girls!! :)

Wow... proof that most r and b singers have swagger-jacked Janet at one time or another!!!
