Hey Coily Girls! I'm soooo late in posting this! My BF and I stumbled upon this natural hair exhibit when we were at the library one day. We were pleasantly surprised to find it, but sadly, NOT SO surprised at how many black people were walking past it and not even acknowledging it or stopping to check it out!

The exhibit was basically a celebration of natural hair, and how the perception of it has changed over time. I hope you enjoy my pics!!

Comparing MY puff to HERS! LOL

I liked this Bantu Knots statue.

My boyfriend is a big advocate of natural hair!!! LOL He has ALWAYS wanted me to go natural. He just cut his locs last year.

According to the passage underneath the older pic, if a woman wore her hair like "this" long ago, she was considered to be in "distress, sick, or sad." LOL WHAAAAAT??????? The pics are to show how it has become acceptable and fashionable for a black woman to wear their afros wild and free and how times have changed.

Hey Coily Girls!!!! Hope you're enjoying your weekend. As for me, I'm having a laaaaaazy weekend of sleep, "Real Housewives of Atlanta" reruns and countless cups of my new favorite tea of the moment, Vanilla Caramel Truffle tea. Also feeling a bit nostalgic right now and thinking about summer! I hate cold weather!! It makes me want to hibernate!!! LOL
I know I have been slacking MAJORLY with my blog, but school started last month and it's kind of hard to jump back into that grind again! Finally adjusting and finding some free time.
Have you guys bought your tickets for Michael Jackson's "This Is It?" My boyfriend and I will be catching the premier at midnight on October 27th. Don't ask me HOW I'm going to do this and still make it to work. When I was in college, I could stay up all night long and still make my 8:30 class with no problem!!! It's not so easy now!! I'm still a night owl AND an "early bird", just not when it comes to WORK!! LOL I'm looking forward to the movie though!!
Speaking of movies, have any of you seen "Good Hair" yet? I was hoping to see it today, but my boyfriend has a ton of work for school, so maybe we'll go tomorrow.
Well, once again, I want to apologize for my hiatius!! I've been in a serious hair RUT too, and I am once again contemplating going back to black hair. Dilemmas, dilemmas!!!! LOL
Enjoy your weekend, Coily Girls!!

Am I the only one who thinks Solange is fly??? I have always loved her style, even prior to his haircut. I bought both of her albums and although I can't say I LOVED every song, I definitely appreciate her creativity. Contrary to popular belief, musically, she has never tried to do what Beyonce is doing and has tried to be her own person.

I'm really glad to see that Honey Magazine is back!! I used to have a subsciption to it back in the day. Will I subscribe again??? I don't know. Probably not! I read a lot of on-line magazines and blogs now and don't really need to!! Besides, I already subscribe to Essence and Stylewatch, and that's just too much paper cluttering up my space!!

This is such a helpful video!!!!! I hate when my twistouts frizz up too much. Hope you find this helpful!

Funny, I haven't used my Cantu' this summer because I usually saved that for Wash and Go's. i basically twisted my hair this summer, so at least this gives me a chance to use the Cantu up! I hate wasting products! LOL

I tried diffusing my hair before with DISASTROUS results!! I think it's worth revisiting again. Especially since I am still missing my length from my disastrous cut this summer. I'm finally to the point where I've gotten used to it, but I still miss my hair!!!!!

Curly Nikki's Twist -N- Curl

Okay, I came across this video and KNEW I had to post it. I've been dying to try the Twist N-Curl, but I'm a little remedial when it comes to new hairstyles! I tend to keep it simple. A little twisting here and there, a braid-out, an updo, a ponytail, and that's about it!!! I need to find new ways to switch my look up!Nothing too drastic, but I'm definitely about to start trying rollers. Anyway, hopefully this video can help anyone else who may be in a bit of a "hair rut" right now!! LOL

I love how the "Twist -N- Curl gives your ends something more to do than just HANG! LOL I love the extra curl it gives to your hair.

Happy Sunday!

Download This!!!

Good morning, Coily Girls!! Happy Sunday!! I will be starting a new feature called "Download This", where I will share links to hot podcasts and music. (mp3's) I have gotten a few requests, so I figured I would just start sharing the links on my blog.

Here are some podcasts I really enjoyed:

Delano Smith- "The Essential Michael Jackson House Mix"

When I tell you this mix STAYS in rotation in my car, I am not exaggerating. It's the best MJ mix I've ever heard. Granted, if you're looking for traditional MJ music, this is not it. The producer of this podcast remixed all of MJ's songs and added a house beat to it. I love it! I think you will too. Check it out:

If you're a fan of 90's music, you'll love these two podcasts!!!! For me, the 90's reminds me of my college days, so I love these podcasts for nostalgic reasons!

http://thegetdowncrew.podomatic.com/entry/2008-04-09T15_38_54-07_00 ("Daily Crack" podcast. It's called "R and B U Don't Know U Love Yet"

Enjoy the podcasts, ladies!! :)

Assault With A Deadly Weapon! (Scissors)

Okay, so I'm having a hair crisis right now!! I'm realizing just how much of my hair the stylist cut last month!!! Every time I try to style it in my original hair style, I'm realizing it won't GO in that style because the HAIR isn't there anymore!!! She cut a whole bunch of layers in my hair,(especially on top) which was NOT what I wanted at all! I planned to still wear my hair straight sometimes, but I'm not even sure how this style would look straightened.

I wish I had taken my OWN advice, which is NEVER GET YOUR HAIR CUT WHEN IT'S WET!!! It's fine for relaxed hair, because relaxed hair is still straight when it's wet, but my hair shrinks up RIDICULOUSLY when it's wet, so as a result, I got SCALPED when I only wanted a trim!

I'm having a bad hair day, ladies..... LOL, so I'm posting these inspirational pics to console and inspire myself, and hopefully YOU as well. (I'm being overly-dramatic, I know!!)

Have a great day!!

Another pic of Solange's hair. I love this on her! I can't believe she got so much flack over this style! I think it accentuates her features! I could NEVER go this short, but I think Solange really has the face for it!

Maxwell's new album is H-O-T!!!! I would have liked MORE SONGS, though, but I won't complain!!!

Me and Maxwell, 2000.

Sorry I took so long to post these. Pics of my haircut.

Wash and Go Vs. Twist-out

Just thought I'd show the difference in how my hair looks after a Wash and Go and a fresh twistout. The Wash and Go is okay in a pinch, but my style of CHOICE is a twistout. For one thing, as you can see, my curls shrink up really tightly!!! It's just pinned up with bobby pins in the pic. I really needed that cut!! My hair curls up a lot more now that all the split ends are gone! Ironically, it seems the longer my hair gets, the more SHRINKAGE I get !! I don't know if this is possible, but that's what it seems like! LOL

I also wanted to show you my trim. I got it cut in an angle in the front, and it's now a little shorter than the back. I didn't ASK for this cut, but this is what I ended up with after the salon. Luckily, I like it. Well, let me put this another way. I'd like it BETTER on someone else. I liked my hair better BEFORE I got it cut. I miss the length I used to have in the front. Oh well, it'll grow back! Funny how I couldn't be this light-hearted about getting a lot of hair cut when my hair was relaxed. My hair took a lot longer to grow back then. LOL

Hey Coily Girls!!

I'm back! I needed to take a break from blogging to wrap up summer school. Now that's over, and I'm in VACATION MODE!! Here's what SUCKS now, though. August has always meant BACK TO SCHOOL to me. I mean, granted, we still have almost 4 more weeks left, but seeing the Back to School sales and commercials kind of takes away from idle relaxation for me. If you're a teacher or a student right now, I know you feel me on this! LOL

This summer, I haven't really gotten away as much as I would have liked. I went to the beach ONCE. I plan to go a few more times this month. Typically, August is vacation month for me, but financially, I don't think that's feasible right now. So, me and my bf will probably do some local get-aways. (Better than nothing!)I'm open to suggestions, if you have any! :)

Well, I need to get dressed now... supposed to be going to lunch and I should have BEEN ready! I always get sooo caught up with Facebook and all my hair sites, and before I know it, the day is GONE!!!

Have a great day, Coily Girls! It's GREAT to be back!
Coily Girl of the Week: Naturallysweet09!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of my Fotki friends who recently BC'ed!

Why did you decide to go natural?

To be honest, I felt like I was never going to "find myself" spiritually. I have always cared about what others thought of me whether their opinions mattered or not. I had been trying new things (such as wardrobe changes, etc.) and while finishing up my last semester of college, I wasn't even paying attention to my hair. I had gotten a traumatizing relaxer complete with chemical burns and shed/damaged hair. So I decided to chill on washing it every week, flat ironing it every other day and condition alot. It seemed to work and before I knew it, I had gone 2 1/2 months without a perm. I started to search the web for new styles and I had done them all before. Short, bob, long.....and the list went on with the same STRAIGHT styles. So after stalking nappturality.com and fotki.com for another month, I decided that going natural would help me "find myself" and to accept whatever was staring right back at me in the mirror each morning!

What are the best and worst things about having natural hair?

The best thing is that I get to wet my hair if only just to rinse it in the shower! Something that I once dreaded getting close to my head is now welcomed....my friend WATER!!!! : ) The only thing I can say is the worst thing about my natural hair is that it doesn't look the same way everyday. One day I'll wake up and cowash and then I'll have beautiful shine and softness. The next day I can wake up and cowash and then have low shine, and hair that feels like I didn't love on it that morning with oils, lol. I'm still learning and I will find out what makes my hair almost, if not the same way, every day.

Do you straighten your hair? What precautionary measures do you take?

Well, at this point, I can straighten it! lol I'm still in the TWA stage. But while I was transitioning, I used the generic version of chi infusion heat protectant (I'm frugal yall! lol) from sally's and it worked wonders for me! You can see where I straightened it in my fotki (4th month transitioning album). http://public.fotki.com/NaturallySweet09/

Your current products/ routine:

I ALWAYS use cold water....its crazy at first but its worth it for killing unruly frizz. I mix VO5 Passion fruit Moisture Milks and Giovanni Hydrating Calming 50/50 conditioner together for my co wash either every morning or every other morning. I use Giovanni Direct Leave In (love this), then olive oil mixed with coconut oil!IF I want a little definition, I will use a little of my Aubrey Organics Aloe Vera gel mixed with my ecostyler gel. But I rarely use it....good, but I rarely need it. For shampoo I use Dr. Bronner's Rose Hemp Castille Soap. I do this maybe once every two weeks. For my weekly deep conditioner I use warm honey, olive oil,Olive Oil Replenishing Pack, a squirt or two of my trusty VO5 Moisture Milks, melted shea butter, and melted coconut oil! I throw on a shower cap for 30 minutes and let the heat from my head work it's magic!

Do you have any color in your hair? If so, what kind?

I am absolutely terrified of color so if I do, I will be using henna. Heat altered my texture while I transitioned for 6 months and I had to cut off most if not all of my progress. So that's why I am extremely afraid.

Your hair type:

I have never really "typed" my hair since I have quite a few in my head. But my guess is majority 4A and 4B at my temples.

Has reaction from family/friends/opposite sex been positive or negative?

My mom absolutely hated it. My grandma is afraid that it won't grow back but likes it. My brother keeps calling me India.Arie so I take that as a compliment since I love her hair. lol And my boyfriend is the one that "fixed" my BC so he loves it! I've gotten mostly positive comments or the famous, "It's cute on you." or "Only you could pull that off."

Favorite hair accessories:

None yet. I have enough hair to pick out and throw a head band on but I'm trying to keep my edges in tip top shape for now because they are thin by nature.

Your hair length goal:

Shoulder length unstretched. That's all I ask! If it grows past that then so be it! : ) I just want it to be healthy!

Your hair idols:

I'm gonna have to go with NowIAmNappy from fotki.com. I saw alot of her posts on nappturality and she always had the most detailed and informative answers. Then I found her on fotki and I have been stalking.....excuse me, keeping up with all of her picture updates! lol She has helped me EVERY TIME I needed help and I'm thankful! : ) Copa-Canary from fotki, Zahra from fotki, Ebony Princess from fotki, and of course I love luvbenet3's hair from fotki! ; ) Other than that it is sooo hard to just name others because every head of hair is different! Advice to transitioners: Be sooo very careful with heat. I mentioned above that I had to cut off 6 months worth of progress because of the heat placed onto my new growth with a cheap heat protectant. Don't compare your new growth to others and realize that there is beauty in ALL natural hair. Not just your favorite texture that you've seen on youtube, fotki, etc.

I am sooo lovin' MJ's unreleased song,"A Place With No Name!" So far, only this snippet is available on-line, but I predict it's another big hit!

Hey Coily Girls!!!
Update! Update! I got my hair done yesterday! I went to a place called "Au Naturel" here in Philly. I got a much-needed trim, a color, and a twistout. I love the color. I stayed "light", but got a deeper brown called "tobacco". My last color was kind of brassy, so I like this much better.

On the downside, I feel BALDHEADED. Granted, I needed this trim desperately. My hair hasn't seen scissors since May 2008. I won't know whether or not I like my hair until I wash it. Right now my hair still feels plastered to my head like a grease monkey from all the shea butter and oil the girl used.

For some reason, it's sooo much harder for me to trim my hair now that I'm natural. I don't trust people at all to give me a cut I like! Especially when they say they want to cut my hair wet, as this stylist did. Well..... there's not much I can do about it now. I will post pics as soon as I wash my hair. Have a great weekend!

Good Morning Coily Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry I've been away for so long! I have to admit, Michael Jackson's death really affected me, and I just wasn't in the mood for blogging!!! Add to that, all the despicable things the media is continuing to say about him even though he's gone. You get what I'm saying, I'm sure. I have been watching all the coverage, hoping to hear some answers, but instead, there's been a lot of negativity!!

Anyway, I have a new "Coily Girl" of the week. (Royal Empress) Her post appears under my MJ videos. (That's because I actually WROTE the post 2 weeks ago, but waited to post it! Sorry!)

Hope you're all enjoying your summer so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coily Girl of the Week: Meet Royal Empress!

Her hair is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! Length, texture, color.... just beautiful! I'm sure you will agree.Royal Empress is in college in Houston, and a Spanish Major. Wow... when I think of the money I could have saved in college if MY hair had been natural. (SMH)

I think most of my work-study checks probably went to RELAXERS!!! LOL ! Anyway, Royal Empress was kind enough to give me an IN-DEPTH interview on how she maintains her gorgeous coils! I know you'll enjoy her story.Thank you, Royal Empress!

** To see more of Royal Empress, check out her Fotki page (www.fotki.com/royalempress2) and her videos at http://www.youtube.com/TheRoyalEmpress

Q: Why did you decide to go natural?

I never decided to ‘go natural’ because I was really unaware that there was a process to it. To me I was just growing my relaxer out. I couldn’t afford to get relaxers on a regular basis. I’ve always had thick, dense hair so I would always go to the salon to get it relaxed & the least I’ve had to pay was $65; the most was $108. It would be sometimes 3 to 4 months before I would get it touched up and it was hard always dealing with the two textures, but I loved the feel of my new growth. Before my last relaxer I had waited 7 months & I only went back because of prom.

I didn’t know how to do anything with my relaxed hair besides put it in a ponytail or a sloppy bun & it always looked crazy because I never owned a flat iron so it was big. Wearing it in a pony tail all the time caused breakage & there would always be hair on the floor at my house & everybody would complain. I thought that my hair was healthy because it was long, waist length at it it’s longest, but from the back the end was shaped like a ‘V’ and the hairdressers at the salon would always cut it.

Besides all that, I was tired of depending on other people to do my hair, being in salons for hours, & having my scalp & face (on one occasion) being chemically burned .[she went too far in her attempts to relax my sideburns, smh]

Q: What are the best and worst things about having natural hair?

Best: We are still a minority, so you always stand out. It’s healthy, I don’t mind a few raindrops, I really NEVER have to go to a salon so I’m saving tons of money. Also it is EXTREMELY versatile…if I want the relaxed look I can flat iron it. If I want a fro …let my shrinkage do its thing. Big wavy/curly hair…twist out. I can do anything!!! Also you learn to love yourself ‘raw’!

Worst: At times it is harder to deal with and takes more time to style as it grows longer, Tangles can get pretty serious sometimes, some people become product junkies. Also it sucks to have to purchase products that are only available online; they’re already expensive as it is and then you have to pay for shipping and then wait for your package to arrive. There are not as many natural hair salons and the ones that are available are pretty expensive. Stereotypes and assumptions can be annoying too, but they don’t actually bother me.
Q: Do you straighten your hair? What precautionary measures do you take?

I straighten my hair maybe once or twice a year. I think I’m going to stick with once because I hate heat damage and I feel that it can’t be avoided 100 percent.
To straighten my hair I flat iron it.

I shampoo and condition my hair in sections, detangle while it’s wet in sections, towel dry about 80% dry, then apply heat protectant product liberally from roots to ends, blow dry in sections, then I may or may not add more heat protectant before I flat iron in smaller sections. Then trim the ends.

Q: What are your current products/ routine?

I wash my hair in sections once a week.I shampoo with Suave Clarifying Shampoo.
I condition and sometimes co-wash with Suave Humectant Conditioner or VO5 Tea Therapy, but my favorite is Herbal Essences Hello Hydration.

Detangle in sections in the shower with my showercomb and my denman brush.
I just started deep conditioning again, I will try to do it once a week. I’ve tried Elasta QP, and Lustrasilk Cholesterol. I don’t really have a preference so I will continue to try new brands when I finish what I already have. I deep condition under a hooded dryer.
I always style my hair fresh out of the shower so I use products that feel good on wet hair.

I usually do two-strand twists or a combo of twists and cornrows nowadays.
I have tons of products so I never use one specific thing for styling my hair, but this is one that I’ve used tons of times to twist with on wet hair: Africa’s Best Organics Leave-In Liquid Hair Mayonnaise.

Other products:
On dry hair I like QB AOHC, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Unrefined Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil.
I recently got Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Milk and Qhemet Biologics Olive&Honey Hydrating Balm and Burdock Root Butter Cream. I’m not too impressed with Karen’s yet, but I still have to give it another try..smells awesome though. I will update my fotki on my Karen’s and my new QB products.

Q: Do you have any color in your hair? If so, what kind?

No hair color. I want to go red, but I’m scared I might damage it and make it even dryer than it already gets.Your hair type: I have some 3c, but the majority of my hair is 4a and 2 sections of 4b at my temples.

Q: Has reaction from family/friends/opposite sex been positive or negative?

My sister and I have the same mother but different fathers, her father was Chinese and our mother is black and white so my sister’s hair is pretty much straight/wavy naturally and she still thinks I should get it relaxed and cut, BUT she does compliment my hair sometimes so I think she would support me either way. My father(black) used to put his 2 cents in all the time years after I grew out my relaxer he would say “you know…every now and then you need to put a perm on the edges” [what the hell? Just on the edges, huh?]

Most of my family has natural hair, but they have looser textures or straighten their hair primarily. As far as my friends…I swear I never advised them to go natural unless they state some interest to me and I have inspired 3 of them to go natural, one still rocks sew-ins 100% of the time, one is a natural NAZI lol (www.fotki.com/ayrihannahaircut), and the other is my sidekick/mannequin head (fotki.com/skittledittle) ;and now my sis-in-law wants to give it a go too.

Q: What are your favorite hair accessories?

Comb clips, my 6 foot scarf from H&M ($10), the cute knit hats for colder weather, and I like those cloth flower head bands @ forever21,my 6 foot scarf that I bought from H&M for 10 bucks to wrap my head and I love these thingys from Claire’s ($8):

Q: Your hair length goal?

I don’t really have a hair length goal, I guess I’ve reached it and I have cut my hair a few times in the recent past, so I just have a health goal. I have some sections of my hair that are just always dry no matter what so I’m seeking soft hair all over and to maintain my shrinkage by avoiding heat damage.Your hair idols: I love Sabina Karlsson’s hair and I am a huge fan of shrinkage so I love Mwedzi (www.fotki.com/mwedzi) and RusticBeauty’s (www.fotki.com/rusticbeauty) hair because it’s just so elastic and to me that screams HEALTHY!!!

What advice would you give to transitioners?

Don’t transition for too long like I did, appreciate and take advantage of your hair and learn to deal with it at every length!!! As it grows longer and longer you will miss your shorter length at times.

Try to avoid straightening too often; you’ll regret it when you’re completely natural with heat damage!

Also to me it seems silly to spend money on expensive hair products and use it on your relaxed hair during transition [I’ve seen this]. You’re just going to chop it off so I would say just use it on your new growth.

And for those who will wear braids during transition, please be gentle with your edges and take special care of them to prevent traction alopecia!!!
